Underpinning UNPRPD Fund’s work are three cross-cutting approaches focused on enabling full and effective participation of persons with disabilities; ensuring the inclusion of marginalized and underrepresented groups of persons with disabilities; addressing gender inequality and advancing the rights of women and girls with disabilities. These approaches are to be applied across all aspects of UNPRPD Fund’s work, including its structures, processes, and programs.
Persons with disabilities are critical partners in UNPRPD Fund structures and programs, and the most effective way to include persons with disabilities in UNPRPD Fund programs is to partner with organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs). Therefore, OPDs meaningfully participate in the design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of UNPRPD Fund programs. The International Disability Alliance is a member of the Policy Board and management Committee of the Fund.
However, this is often not enough to ensure that all persons with disabilities are involved. Therefore, all programs must take concerted action to include marginalized and underrepresented groups of persons with disabilities, such as for instance persons with psychosocial disabilities and deaf-blind persons, and must use a gender lens to address gender inequality to advance the rights of women and girls with disabilities.
By working side-by-side with OPDs, UNPRPD Fund programs are more likely to meet the needs and priorities of persons with disabilities, respond to the national context, and elevate the voices of persons with disabilities across decision-making processes.
